It appears as though I will not get 275 meals out of this experiment. The portions are simply too small and I'm very much opposed to starving. Tonight I finished off the potato bakon soup which meant I only really got 2 meals out of it. That's a far cry from five. I may be able to cut some of the other meals with rice or various beans. I have very little meat on hand though. In fact, the only meat I do have is in the freezer.
To supplement dinner, I ate an apple, a toasted English muffin with Parmesan cheese, and a glass of milk. It was rather good. So far, I don't feel as if I'm really suffering through this experiment. The boredom of eating the same meal again and again will probably be the biggest challenge.
Now I just need to figure out what will be for dinner tomorrow.
I think the bucket is a rip off. It lists 275 "servings" but each serving is only 90 calories. Just to get the normal 2,000 daily caloric intake, you'd have to eat 22.2 "servings a day. [I think it's also safe to assume that in an emergency, you're likely to be very active defending yourself, scavenging for food, fighting zombies, etc. which will require much more energy.] Also, at that rate you'll be eating 444% of your daily intake of sodium each day which will very quickly cause you problems, let alone the assumption that you'll have an unlimited supply of fresh water to ease your necessarily unending thirst, along with some high blood pressure and kidney stone medication. I think that any arguments that you're supposed to supplement the bucket with other foods is stupid, because the entire point of the buck is emergency rationing - for use when other food is not available. For emergency preparedness, I think you'd be better off with dried beans, rice, some form of vitamin C to prevent scurvy, and a large supply of fresh water. Nevertheless, good luck and keep surviving. I'll be reading!!!
ReplyDeleteSome of the meals have more calories but also more sodium as well. Honestly, if I were to not supplement my meals, I'd be in a world of hurt. It's funny you should mention the emergency preparedness food because I just bought a ton of dried beans. I'll take a picture and post them to the blog when I get home.
ReplyDeleteLet's not lose sight of the real reason for doing this: preparing for the zombie invasion.
Just to clear up my comment- I wasn't saying your idea was stupid, just any argument that the manufacture could make about needing supplements as an excuse for not providing nutritious meals. I hope you didn't take it that way. I totally understand your necessity. When the zombies do invade, I will know who to look towards for advice on survival provisions.
ReplyDeleteOh, don't worry. I knew what you were getting at. I kind of want to fill up the bucket after the experiment with real survival provisions for the same 83 dollar price.
